02Maine's NP rules and who can teach you
Maine lets NPs practice on their own after 24 months spent under a supervising NP or physician, or as the employee of a clinic or hospital that has a physician medical director. An NP still inside that window isn't barred from precepting by anything SAU publishes, but say where they stand when you submit them.
SAU's own rules ask less than people expect. For NP tracks the 2023-24 catalog asks only for a local certified NP, physician or PA who passes faculty approval. SAU publishes no minimum years of experience. See preceptor requirements for the track-by-track detail.
03Does Maine regulate out-of-state programs?
Not that we could find. The Board's Chapter 7 rule covers approval of Maine's own pre-licensure programs and is silent on schools elsewhere sending students to Maine sites. The Nurse Practice Act's student exemption (32 MRSA §2103(2)) is written for students working toward initial licensure. SAU's online students are already RNs, so the practical point is simpler: hold a license that is valid in Maine.
04Where to start looking in Maine
Portland-South Portland is by far the biggest metro, several times the size of Bangor or Lewiston-Auburn. Systems worth approaching include Northern Light Health, MaineHealth, Central Maine Healthcare and MaineGeneral Health. If Portland-area practices are full, widen the radius: a smaller practice an hour away is still a Maine site SAU can approve.

05Your license for Maine clinicals
Maine began issuing compact licenses in January 2018. A Maine resident's multistate license covers practice here, and a nurse whose primary residence is another compact state can practice in Maine on that state's multistate license. If your home state sits outside the compact, you'd need a Maine license. The 2023-24 catalog asks for an unrestricted RN license in your state of practice; the licensing page explains the details.

Yes. Maine is authorized on SAU's nursing list, so an FNP student who lives in Maine can propose a Maine preceptor and site. The FNP needs 625 hours, spread across three semesters of NUR 680 in the 2023-24 catalog, so plan for the chance that one preceptor can't cover them all.
Does Maine require SAU to register before my clinicals start?
No such requirement turned up. The Board's rule on nursing education deals with Maine's own pre-licensure programs and says nothing about graduate students from other states. Individual sites may still set conditions, such as an affiliation agreement with SAU, so ask each site early.
Can a newer NP in Maine be my preceptor?
SAU publishes no minimum years of experience, so the decision rests with SAU faculty. In Maine, an NP with under 24 months of practice works under supervision or inside a qualifying employer. Mention that when you submit them, along with their certification and setting.
Is there a Maine incentive for clinicians who precept?
None is on record for Maine. SAU doesn't publish preceptor pay or perks either. Your pitch works best when it shows the practice what you already know, which days you're available and how SAU's faculty will stay in touch during the rotation.
