Spring Arbor AGPCNP: 500 hours in adult-gerontology primary care

At 47 credits and 500 clinical hours, the AGPCNP is the shortest of SAU's four NP tracks by credits. The current page offers six intakes a year, estimates two years and five months to finish, and includes a single four-day residency on campus during year two. The featured courses are NUR 632 Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and NUR 642 Chronic Disease and Complex Problems in Older Adults.

The 2023-24 Graduate Catalog, the most recent full graduate catalog that is publicly readable, shows a 50-credit version of the same track. It describes the population as adults and late teens, and the concentration courses point at adult and older-adult care. None of them covers young children or pregnancy, which is the main clinical difference from the FNP.

02Three semesters of NUR 680 at 2, 2 and 4 credits

In the 2023-24 catalog the AGPCNP shares its practicum number with the FNP but not its weight: NUR 680 runs over three semesters at 2, 2 and 4 credits. With the catalog's ratio of 125 hours per 2 credits, those 8 credits line up with the 500-hour total. SAU does not publish how many hours belong to each semester, so rely on your syllabus.

Numbering may have moved on. The 2024-25 catalog index lists a page titled NUR 770P AGNP Clinical Experience I, which could not be opened because the current catalogs sit behind a human check. Before you tell a preceptor your course number, confirm it in Brightspace or with your advisor. The NUR 680 practicum page compares the AGPCNP and FNP versions side by side.

03Preceptors who fit adult-gerontology primary care

In the catalog's wording, the practicum preceptor is a certified NP, physician or PA practicing near you, and program faculty sign off on each one while SAU clinical faculty oversee the experience. For this track the practical target is a clinician whose panel is mostly adults and older adults: internal medicine, adult primary care, geriatric practices and clinics that follow chronic disease closely.

A family practice can still work if your own patients there are adults, but that is faculty's call for each rotation. SAU publishes no minimum years of experience, no rule on precepting at your employer and no telehealth limit. The preceptor requirements page lists those gaps so you know what to ask before approaching anyone.

04No partner-network line on this track

The 2026 line about SAU working with students to secure placements, and the clinical partner network that goes with it, appears on the FNP and PMHNP pages only. We checked the MSN AGPCNP, RN-to-AGPCNP and certificate AGPCNP pages on September 24, 2026, and none of them carries it. The FAQ's statement that you choose your own preceptor in your home state applies here without any added promise.

SAU's general help still applies. A 2015 post, still online, points students to the SAU Online program director, who can share names of local providers willing to host SAU students. SAU's later clinicals post explains how to find out whether sites near you already have an affiliation agreement, and it promises a Student Success Coach through placement. 05Prerequisites and the residency before NUR 680

Under the 2023-24 catalog, no MSN practicum opens until you have passed the residency, NUR 602R, along with NUR 612, NUR 618 and NUR 602. NUR 602 itself sits behind the foundation courses NUR 510, NUR 522, NUR 532 and NUR 551, so the practicum lands well into the program. The RN-to-AGPCNP page also lists NUR 628, pharmacology for nurse practitioners, and it is not confirmed whether that course now has to come before clinicals.

The residency is a four-day stay on the Spring Arbor, Michigan campus in your second year, linked to advanced health assessment. Book travel early, because the practicum cannot begin until you pass it. Timing and the check-off are on the MSN residency page, and the prerequisites page tracks the full chain. Background checks, insurance and immunization records are a separate list that also has to be current before day one.

06Hour figures elsewhere, and state limits

A third-party NP school directory lists the AGPCNP at 570 hours. SAU's own program page and the 2023-24 catalog both say 500, so plan on 500 and treat the directory figure as unreliable unless your advisor says otherwise.

Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana and New York sit outside SAU's nursing authorization, and SAU's March 2026 disclosure says the adult-gerontology NP falls short of licensure rules in all four. Washington works only for residents; the state board's June 2026 list names SAU's MSN AGPCNP on that basis. DC and the territories aren't mentioned either way, so check before planning hours there.

Hold an unrestricted RN license for whichever state your patients are in. If that isn't where you work, raise it with faculty; the state authorization page follows the 2026 changes to SAU's list.
