01Which SAU programs can train in Massachusetts

02A Board process built for schools from elsewhere
Massachusetts spells this out in 244 CMR 6.03(2). When the institution behind a nursing program is based mainly in another state, the Board of Registration in Nursing signs off on whatever teaching or clinical work that program does in Massachusetts. The school files an annual institutional application (Part A) six months or more before placements, then a separate request for every student placement (Part B) at least 30 days before the rotation. Changes go in two weeks before the start date, and no student begins until the Board's letter is in hand.
Whether any of that touches you is unclear. The Board frames its criteria around programs leading to the NCLEX, and its page never mentions post-licensure or APRN education. Because nothing published answers the question for an SAU MSN or DNP rotation, ask SAU's program director early and keep slack in your calendar in case SAU decides a filing is required.
03Licensing: the compact is on paper, not in force
Lawmakers adopted the Nurse Licensure Compact in November 2024. The Board's position is that nothing changes for practice until implementation is complete, which it targets for May 2027; a conditional approval tied to FBI background checks arrived in May 2026. In the meantime a multistate license held in another state does not cover Massachusetts. With SAU's 2023-24 catalog asking for an unrestricted license where you practice, a Massachusetts RN license is the one to hold. Our licensing page covers the rest.
04NP practice and where to look
A Massachusetts NP reaches full practice once two years of supervision by a qualifying APRN or physician are behind them, and equivalent experience can sometimes stand in. SAU's 2023-24 catalog lets NP, physician and PA preceptors teach its NP tracks, so any of the three can be proposed.
Greater Boston dwarfs the rest of the state, followed by Worcester, Springfield and the Massachusetts slice of the Providence metro. Systems to approach include Beth Israel Lahey Health, Baystate Health in the west, Mass General Brigham, Boston Medical Center Health System and UMass Memorial Health. Academic systems often set their own student requirements, so check for an affiliation agreement early.

Will my multistate license cover SAU clinicals in Massachusetts?
It won't for now. The compact became law here in 2024, yet the Board says it carries no practice rights until implementation finishes, aimed at May 2027. Until that happens, any RN practice in Massachusetts, clinical rotations included, calls for a Massachusetts license.
Does the Board of Registration in Nursing have to approve my SAU placement?
Perhaps not, though it's worth asking. 244 CMR 6.03(2) creates approvals for programs based outside Massachusetts, and its criteria describe NCLEX-preparing programs. Nothing published says how it treats graduate NP programs, so ask SAU's program director whether your rotation needs a filing and, if so, who submits it.
Could I do rotations in New Hampshire or Rhode Island instead?
SAU authorizes both, yet each state's own rules would apply and your license would have to be good there. SAU's FAQ also says students choose a preceptor in their home state, so talk to your program director before you plan a rotation across the border.
How many students can a Massachusetts preceptor take at once?
Where the Board's rules for out-of-state programs apply, the ceiling is two students per preceptor and ten per faculty member. If your preceptor already hosts learners from other schools, say so when you submit them for SAU approval, since it may affect timing.
