Spring Arbor PMHNP: 500 hours across several psychiatric placements

01PMHNP hours: 500 now, 570 in an older post

SAU's live PMHNP page sets the track at 50 credits and 500 clinical hours. It estimates two years and five months to finish, includes one four-day campus visit in the second year, and leaves out how many intakes run each year. The tuition page repeats 500, and the 2023-24 catalog sets it as the minimum.

One SAU source disagrees. The "Clinicals in Nursing Education: FAQ" post on SAU's online blog, first seen in 2021, gave 570 hours for the PMHNP. That post predates the current program page, so 500 is the figure to plan around, but if your syllabus shows something else, your syllabus wins.

02The course chain that leads to NUR 780M

The PMHNP concentration is a strict sequence in the 2023-24 catalog. NUR 712 Neurobiology and Psychopathology comes first, then NUR 713 Psychopharmacology, then NUR 714, advanced practice with adults, then NUR 715 for children, adolescents and young adults. NUR 780M, the PMHNP Clinical Practicum, lists NUR 714 as its prerequisite, and NUR 781 integrates evidence at the end.

Above that chain sit the four gates shared by every MSN practicum: pathophysiology, pharmacology, health assessment and the residency, numbered NUR 612, NUR 618, NUR 602 and NUR 602R. The residency is four days in Spring Arbor, Michigan in your second year, with a head-to-toe check-off. Miss it and the psych practicum waits. Course numbers here come from the 2023-24 catalog. Confirm yours in Brightspace or with your advisor, because the newer catalogs could not be read.

03Why SAU tells you to plan several placements

The 2023-24 description of NUR 780M covers the psychiatric mental health population across the lifespan and tells students to plan on different clinical placements over the course. Take that literally when you plan: one preceptor may not see adults, adolescents and children in enough volume to cover both semesters.

A workable plan pairs an adult-focused preceptor with one who sees younger patients, mirroring the split between NUR 714 and NUR 715. SAU does not publish an hour split by age group, so ask faculty what mix they expect before you commit anyone.

A third-party program directory lists SAU's current PMHNP clinicals as NUR 770M and NUR 780M, Clinical Experience I and II. That could not be checked against SAU's current catalog. The NUR 780M practicum page follows the course in detail.

04Who can precept PMHNP hours

For NP practicums, SAU's catalog accepts three kinds of preceptor, certified NPs, physicians and PAs, provided they practice locally and faculty approve them. It does not publish a psych-specific list. The natural fits are board-certified PMHNPs and psychiatrists; a PA or an NP in another specialty working in a psychiatric setting is a question to put to faculty first.

Telehealth is the other open question. SAU publishes no limit on virtual hours, and the claim that SAU PMHNP students see a growing share of patients by telehealth comes from a directory, not from SAU. Read the virtual clinical options page before you accept a mostly remote rotation, and check the preceptor requirements page for the rest of what is and isn't written down.

05The partner network on the PMHNP page

The PMHNP page added SAU's newer wording earlier than the FNP page did. An archive copy from February 8, 2026 lacks it; a copy from May 14, 2026 has it. The page now says SAU works with students to secure placements matching their preferred location and offers access to a clinical partner network. The RN-to-PMHNP and certificate PMHNP pages carry the same line.

No page names a partner or explains how students tap the network, and the FAQ still tells you to choose your own preceptor in your home state. Nothing published promises a psych site. Ask the NP program leadership what the network holds for psychiatric rotations in your region, and keep your own search moving in parallel so a slow answer does not cost you a semester. 06State limits for PMHNP students

SAU's nursing programs are not authorized in Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana or New York, and the March 2026 licensure disclosure states that the PMHNP does not meet licensure requirements in those four. Your RN license must be unrestricted in the state where the clinical hours happen, which matters if your psych site sits across a state line from where you work.

Washington is open to residents only. The state board's June 2026 list of approved out-of-state placements includes SAU's MSN PMHNP and its certificate PMHNP, and SAU's accreditations page separately names the PMHNP among programs approved for practice experiences there. SAU's list does not mention DC or the territories. The state authorization page explains how SAU's list changed in 2026. A move mid-program can change which of these rules applies to you, so flag it with faculty early.
