SAU's support, your own leads, or a placement service?

01Three routes, not one choice

SAU's FAQ leaves the choice of preceptor to online NP students, within their home state. So a lead can come from three places: SAU's own resources, your personal and professional network, and outside help such as ours. Nothing stops you working all three at once.

What matters in the end is not where a lead came from but whether it fits your track, your state and your dates, and whether SAU's faculty approve it. A preceptor found through a classmate goes through the same review as one found through SAU or through us.

The real question is how much of the search you can carry yourself, and how much time is left before the four-week paperwork mark for your first practicum.

02What SAU's own support covers

• The program director's list of nearby providers who have said they will host SAU students.
• Preceptors and sites SAU has approved before, which the 2023-24 web page named as a resource.
• A way to see which practices near you have an affiliation agreement with SAU already.
• Guidance from staff, with a checklist of documents to have ready before clinicals.
• A Student Success Coach who supports students during clinical placement.
• For FNP and PMHNP students, since 2026: SAU says it works with you to secure placements that match your preferred location, with access to a clinical partner network.

Where it runs out: SAU publishes no partner names, no coverage by state and no promise of a placement. The partner-network line does not appear on the AGPCNP, PNP-PC, Nurse Educator or MSN/MBA pages, and a 2023-24 promise of a backup site is no longer published. 03What your own leads offer

Your own network is often the fastest route, because trust already exists. SAU's long-running tips post suggests asking SAU students and graduates, friends and family, and your own doctor, and asking your state board of nursing about NP groups. Colleagues count too, though SAU publishes nothing specific about clinicals at your own employer.

Where it runs out: networks are uneven. A student in a narrower track, such as PNP-PC or PMHNP, or in a thinly served area may exhaust personal contacts quickly, and every call is yours to make on top of coursework. Finding your own preceptor and preceptor outreach cover this route in depth.

04What a placement service adds

A service widens the search and takes on the calls and document chasing. Ours looks for preceptors who fit your SAU track near where you live, helps gather what the practice must supply for SAU's forms, and stays on call if a preceptor drops.

It also helps when your own time is the scarcest thing you have. Calls to practices happen during office hours, which is often when you are at work or in a seven-week course's heaviest week.

What it asks of you is a fee, set out in a written quote, and SAU's faculty still give the final approval. The best service earns that fee with a search built around SAU's rules and a file that arrives complete. 06Combining routes without crossed wires

• Tell SAU what else you are doing. Faculty and your Student Success Coach should know if you are using a service or chasing your own leads.
• Keep a single record of every practice contacted, by whom and on what date, so a busy office is never approached twice on your behalf.
• Submit one placement per rotation. Don't let two sites sign paperwork for the same hours.
• Decide quickly when a yes arrives, and let the other leads know politely.

Order matters less than timing. SAU suggests beginning the hunt early in your program, so whichever routes you use, set them going then.
