Oklahoma clinicals for Spring Arbor students
Oklahoma is on SAU's authorized list, and nurses enrolled in APRN programs based elsewhere can train there without asking its board first. That freedom has strings attached, listed in OAC 485:10-5-12(c), and one of them concerns SAU's clinical faculty rather than you, so raise it with the program director early.

01Which SAU programs can use Oklahoma sites
Spring Arbor's nursing state list, checked in September 2026, includes Oklahoma. One list covers every SAU nursing program, so the answer is the same for each track; what differs is the clinical work itself.

02Oklahoma's three conditions for APRN students
Programs leading to a first nursing license must get the Oklahoma Board of Nursing's permission before placing students. Graduate APRN programs sit under a different clause: OAC 485:10-5-12(c) allows a registered nurse studying in another state's APRN program to complete clinicals and preceptorships in Oklahoma with no permission step, if all of the following hold.
- You hold an unencumbered Oklahoma license to practice registered nursing.
- The faculty member responsible for your clinical component is licensed in Oklahoma, without encumbrance, at a level matching or above the course.
- SAU's program satisfies what the board requires of APRN education.
The second condition is SAU's to meet, not yours. Students report (in 2019 forum posts) being turned away from home-state clinicals because SAU lacked a clinical instructor with a license in their state. SAU's job ad for online NP adjunct faculty wants applicants licensed in one of six states, and Oklahoma is on that list. Even so, ask the program director who will oversee your Oklahoma rotation before any preceptor signs.
03Restricted practice, and where to look
AANP puts Oklahoma in its restricted group. An Oklahoma NP must document 6,240 hours of physician-supervised prescribing in writing, and Schedule II drugs stay out of reach. Because SAU's catalog also lets physicians and PAs precept NP students, a physician in the same practice is a fair second ask if the NP declines.
The big systems are SSM Health St. Anthony, OU Health, Hillcrest HealthCare System, INTEGRIS Health and Saint Francis Health System. Tulsa and Oklahoma City hold most of the population, with Lawton and Enid next. 04Oklahoma's preceptor tax credit
HB 3351 (2024) created an Oklahoma income tax credit for in-state-licensed physicians, PAs and APRNs who deliver primary care in Oklahoma and precept APRN, PA or medical students. Credit is counted per 160-hour rotation, up to ten a year, and the Oklahoma Health Care Workforce Training Commission says it is accepting 2026 applications.
The Commission's description does not require the student to attend an Oklahoma school, but eligibility is its decision. If a preceptor is on the fence, mention the credit and let them check. It changes nothing about what SAU's faculty require.
05Licensing, and why SAU students in Oklahoma choose us
Oklahoma has issued multistate licenses since January 19, 2018, when the compact went live there. If you live in Oklahoma, your Oklahoma license is what both SAU's catalog and the state rule expect; more on that in our RN license guide.

Questions Spring Arbor students ask
Does SAU have to ask Oklahoma's board before my NP rotation starts?
Not under OAC 485:10-5-12(c), as long as its conditions hold: an Oklahoma RN license for you, Oklahoma-licensed faculty overseeing the clinical component, and a program that meets the board's APRN education standards. The permission step is for programs that lead to first-time licensure. Confirm the faculty condition with SAU's program director.
Could my Oklahoma preceptor claim the tax credit for precepting me?
Possibly. The credit is for Oklahoma-licensed physicians, PAs and APRNs who give primary care in the state and precept APRN students, in 160-hour rotations. The Tax Commission describes it as nonrefundable, with a five-year carryover, for tax years 2026 through 2035. Funds are limited and handled first come, first served, and the Commission decides who qualifies.
I work at an Oklahoma clinic. Can my SAU hours happen there?
SAU publishes no rule for or against clinical hours at your own employer. What it does require is a qualified preceptor whom faculty approve for that rotation, and hours that meet SAU's patient-care definition. Ask your program faculty before you set it up; our employer site page lists the questions.
Does the Oklahoma rule cover the Nurse Educator practicum?
Not directly. The permission step targets programs leading to a first license, and the (c) conditions target APRN programs. A Nurse Educator or MSN/MBA practicum is neither, so the text is silent.
