01Arkansas and your SAU track

Arkansas is authorized for the whole SAU nursing lineup on the state authorization page we checked on September 24, 2026. Here is how that plays out by program.

02No extra board filing found, with one caveat

Our search of the Arkansas State Board of Nursing's rules turned up nothing that obliges a school based elsewhere to register, or to ask permission, before its student starts in an Arkansas clinic. The board's program standards (17 CAR Part 125) reach outside schools only when they open a new program inside Arkansas, and its APRN program rules (17 CAR Part 123, Subpart 10) lean on national accreditation. Nobody at the board has confirmed that reading for us.

The caveat is the student exemption in A.C.A. § 17-87-103(2), which is written for students of programs the Arkansas board approves. As a licensed RN you practice on your own license, so it bites less for SAU students, but ask the program director whether SAU has checked Arkansas's position for your track. 03Reduced practice and your preceptor search

AANP ranks Arkansas as reduced practice. Every Arkansas NP works under a physician agreement that covers some slice of practice, and some prescribing has to sit under a physician protocol. None of that stops an NP from precepting you, and SAU's NP tracks accept a certified NP, physician or PA.

It does hand you a second lead in many clinics. If an NP says no because of workload, ask whether the collaborating physician would consider taking you instead, then run the name past SAU faculty.

Most students begin around Little Rock, North Little Rock and Conway, then try Northwest Arkansas (Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers), Jonesboro and Fort Smith. Systems to approach include CHI St. Vincent, Mercy's hospitals in Fort Smith and Northwest Arkansas, Baptist Health in Little Rock, UAMS Health, and Arkansas Children's for pediatric work. 04Compact license basics for Arkansas

Arkansas folded the Nurse Licensure Compact into its Nurse Practice Act (Title 17, Chapter 87, Subchapter 6) and has been in the current version of the compact since it took effect on January 19, 2018. SAU's catalog insists on an unrestricted RN license for the state you practice in, and that license sits on SAU's compliance list next to the background check and liability insurance. Renew before the four-week paperwork window, not during it. Our RN license page explains SAU's wording.
