01Idaho and your SAU program

As of September 24, 2026, Idaho is open to every SAU nursing program. The board's preceptor policy is the thread running through the notes below.

02What Idaho's rules say about schools from elsewhere

Idaho's Board of Nursing operates inside the state's occupational licensing division, DOPL. Its program rules (Idaho Code 54-1406, with IDAPA 24.34.01.150) deal with nursing education offered in Idaho and say nothing specific about an outside school placing a student in an Idaho clinic. For that question, the board's web page points schools to a DOPL licensing email rather than a posted procedure.

Two provisions help you directly. Under IDAPA 24.34.01.100.12.a, you may work at the APRN level as a student provided three things line up: you hold an Idaho license or the privilege to practice there, your APRN program carries national accreditation, and the work belongs to the curriculum. SAU's accreditations page lists its MSN and certificates as CCNE-accredited. Idaho Code 54-1412 also exempts students of approved programs doing work incident to formal instruction.

03The 2024 policy on preceptors and faculty

The board adopted education policy HP-BON-Education 1 on April 10, 2024. It asks three things. A preceptor's license, in any nursing program, must match or exceed the level the student is studying for. Anyone teaching nursing courses needs a current, unencumbered right to practice as an RN in Idaho. And instructors who lead APRN role and population-focused courses need an Idaho APRN license.

The first point shapes your search. An NP preceptor plainly meets it for an NP student; if you are weighing a physician or PA, both on SAU's list, ask how faculty read Idaho's wording. 04Full practice, local systems and a border caution

AANP lists Idaho as full practice, so NPs there work without physician oversight and can precept on their own footing. Boise is the largest market, then Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls. Systems are few: St. Luke's Health System, Saint Alphonsus Health System and, up north, Kootenai Health, with independent and rural clinics filling the gaps.

In north Idaho, Spokane is close, but SAU's Washington approval covers practice experiences for Washington residents only, so an Idaho resident should keep clinicals in Idaho.

05Licensing: compact licenses welcome

Idaho has taken part in the current Nurse Licensure Compact since it began on January 19, 2018. A multistate license issued by the member state where you live gives you the privilege to practice that Idaho's student provision mentions, and SAU asks for an unrestricted license where you practice.
