01Which SAU programs can train in Alaska
Every SAU nursing program shows Alaska as authorized (checked September 24, 2026). What changes from track to track is whether Alaska's Board of Nursing expects to hear from you personally.

02Registering with the Alaska Board before your first shift
Alaska is unusual because the student files, not only the school. Under 12 AAC 44.460, anyone in an APRN program based beyond the state's borders must be registered by the Board before doing clinical work there. You send form 08-4253, the APRN Preceptorship Registration, along with its non-refundable fee, proof of enrollment, your RN license (it must be in good standing) and the four-way agreement among SAU, the site, your preceptor and you.
A registration is good for a year at most, it also stops the day your preceptorship does, and Alaska allows a single renewal. The 2023-24 catalog spreads the FNP practicum over three long semesters, which runs past a year, so mark the renewal date early. 03Who can precept you in Alaska
Alaska grants NPs full practice, so an experienced NP working independently is often the most natural fit for an SAU FNP or AGPCNP student. The Board's form describes an Alaska preceptor as an APRN or physician holding an active, unencumbered license or privilege, in a practice focus comparable to yours.
SAU's own list for the NP tracks also includes PAs. Alaska's form does not mention them, so check with the program director before a PA signs anything. Our preceptor requirements page sets out SAU's side.
Most searches begin in Anchorage, then widen to Fairbanks, the Mat-Su valley and Juneau. Worth a call: Mat-Su Regional in Palmer, Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Foundation Health Partners up in Fairbanks, the tribal Alaska Native Medical Center, and HCA's Alaska Regional Hospital.
04Your RN license: Alaska-issued, not compact
Alaska stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact. The Board lists HB 131 and SB 124 as pending in the 2025-2026 session, yet an out-of-state multistate license carries no weight there today. SAU's catalog requires an unrestricted RN license in the practice state, which here means an Alaska license; see RN licenses for SAU clinicals.
Faculty face a rule too: under 12 AAC 44.090(h), an out-of-state instructor whose Alaska clinical grading, added to any other teaching in the state, exceeds 20 working days per licensing period must hold an Alaska RN license. That is SAU's to manage, but it is one more reason to raise Alaska plans early.

Is Alaska's student registration my job or SAU's?
Largely yours, if you are in an SAU NP track or NP certificate. Alaska signs up students of outside APRN programs one by one under 12 AAC 44.460, on form 08-4253. You supply enrollment proof, your RN license details and the signed agreement, and the Board has to approve the arrangement before you begin.
Can a physician assistant precept me in Alaska?
SAU accepts PAs for its NP tracks, but Alaska's registration form describes preceptors as APRNs or physicians. Before you commit to a PA, ask SAU's program director whether faculty and the Board will accept the arrangement. An NP or physician preceptor sidesteps the question entirely if you have the choice.
Will my multistate RN license work in Alaska?
No. Alaska is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, so practicing there, even as a student, takes an Alaska-issued RN license. Bills to join were pending in 2025-2026, but pending is not law. Apply early, because SAU requires an unrestricted license in the state where you practice before any practicum.
What happens if my Alaska preceptorship lasts more than a year?
Alaska caps each registration at one year, ends it early if the preceptorship wraps up, and permits one renewal. With the FNP practicum spread across three semesters in the 2023-24 catalog, plan that renewal before the first year closes and keep copies of every approval with your SAU records.
