Spring Arbor RN-to-BSN: clinical hours in the classroom and the NUR 494 capstone
Spring Arbor's online RN-to-BSN doesn't send you out to find a preceptor. The program page says clinical hours are embedded within the classroom, and the 2025-26 catalog lists no practicum course; the capstone is NUR 494 Senior Nursing Project. You don't need a placement service for this degree. If an MSN comes next, though, the BSN years are a good time to prepare.
Planning an MSN after your BSN?
Tell us which MSN track you are considering, and a placement advisor will explain what its clinical hours will ask of you.

01What the RN-to-BSN asks for clinically
SAU's RN-to-BSN page describes a 38-credit online program you can finish in 20 months, with four intakes a year and the same 7-1-7 format as SAU's graduate programs: one seven-week course at a time with a week off between. Admission asks for a 2.5 GPA and 58 transferable semester hours, and you keep an unrestricted, unencumbered, current license from your state of employment throughout.
On clinicals, the page says only that clinical hours are embedded within the classroom environment. We found no external preceptor requirement on the page or in the catalog. That is the main difference from SAU's master's tracks, where you find and propose your own preceptor, and from SAU's campus BSN and ABSN, where SAU places pre-licensure students near Spring Arbor, Michigan.
02The catalog: no practicum course
The 2025-26 Undergraduate Catalog, read from an archived copy because the live catalog sits behind a human check, lists the online program as the Nursing Post-Licensure Track. Its major courses are NUR 321, NUR 341, NUR 344, NUR 360, NUR 422 Spiritual Dimensions of Health Care, NUR 434, NUR 442, the NUR 452 and NUR 453 series, and NUR 494. Required support and major credits total 50 within a 120-credit degree, and up to 62 nursing credits can transfer from your associate degree.
None of those is a practicum. Where the courses touch clinical skills, they do it through simulation and patient scenarios, as the table shows.
| Course | What the catalog describes | Catalog year |
|---|---|---|
NUR 341 | Introduces simulation | 2023-24 |
NUR 344 | Uses patient scenarios and simulation | 2025-26 |
NUR 442 | Uses simulation for adult assessment | 2023-24 and 2025-26 |
NUR 494 | Senior Nursing Project, 2 credits: a patient-safety, practice or education project with a paper and poster | 2025-26 |
Course numbers can change between catalogs; your Brightspace list or your advisor has the current ones.
03NUR 494 Senior Nursing Project
NUR 494 is the capstone: a 2-credit project on patient safety, practice or nursing education, written up as a paper and presented as a poster. It asks you to apply the program's coursework to a real problem, and a working RN may well find a topic on their own unit.
The catalog adds one condition: compliance with all institutional requirements before the Senior Nursing Project. There's no published checklist for this program, so ask your advisor well before the course what needs to be on file. SAU also doesn't say whether the project needs a site or a named mentor; if your topic involves your unit, ask your instructor what permissions to arrange.
04States and licensure
The RN-to-BSN page names the same four unauthorized states as SAU's main list: Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana and New York. Washington appears on it without the residents-only footnote used on the online program site, and the RN-to-BSN is absent from the Washington board's roster, which covers programs with practice experiences.
Because this degree has no precepted clinical hours, the practical license rule is simpler than for the MSN: keep your RN license current, unrestricted and unencumbered in the state where you work. If you move or change jobs during the 20 months, tell your advisor. SAU's list says nothing about DC or the territories. The state authorization page explains SAU's full list and how it changed in 2026, which matters more once you reach graduate clinicals.
05If an MSN comes next
Everything changes at the graduate level. SAU's MSN tracks carry clinical hours from 125 for the Nurse Educator and MSN/MBA up to 625 for the FNP, and SAU's FAQ puts the preceptor search on you, in your home state. Before any practicum you pass the graduate prerequisites and a four-day campus residency, and in the 2023-24 catalog the preceptor paperwork was due at least four weeks before a clinical course.
There are two routes. You can finish the BSN and enter a BSN-to-MSN track, or choose SAU's RN-to-MSN bridge from the start, a separate program whose bridge courses (NUR 510 and NUR 522 in the 2023-24 catalog) earned credit toward the BSN and MSN at once. The RN-to-MSN page compares the six bridges, and the FNP page shows what the largest clinical load looks like.
06Using the BSN years to prepare
You can't log graduate clinical hours yet, but you can do the slow groundwork. SAU tells graduate students to begin their search within the first few months of the program, and a BSN student is already ahead of that clock.
Pay attention to the NPs, physicians and PAs you already work with, and which local practices take students. Keep your license record clean, since graduate practicums require an unrestricted license. The clinical timeline page and the find your own preceptor page show how graduate students plan the search.
Worth noting during the BSN
- Clinicians you work with who might precept later, and their specialties
- Practices near you that host students, and any that have hosted SAU students
- Which MSN track fits you, since hours run from 125 to 625
07How we help RN-to-BSN students plan ahead
Our work is finding preceptors and sites for graduate clinical courses, and the RN-to-BSN's clinical hours sit inside its courses, so the BSN itself needs no preceptor search.
Where we add value is the step after. If you are weighing an MSN, a placement advisor explains what your chosen track's clinical hours will involve, which preceptor types SAU accepts for it, and when a search should realistically start given your graduation date. There is no need to commit to anything during the BSN.
When you do reach a graduate practicum, SAU's faculty approve every preceptor and site, SAU's own help, from the program director's volunteer list to your Student Success Coach, is the first place to look, and we are ready to add leads and paperwork help alongside it. Use the form below if an early conversation about the MSN would help.
Questions Spring Arbor students ask
Do I need a preceptor for Spring Arbor's RN-to-BSN?
Not according to anything SAU publishes. The program page says clinical hours are embedded within the classroom, and the 2025-26 catalog lists no practicum course. The capstone is NUR 494, a project with a paper and poster. Confirm with your advisor if your course materials say something different.
What is NUR 494 in the Spring Arbor RN-to-BSN?
NUR 494 Senior Nursing Project is the 2-credit capstone in the 2025-26 catalog. You complete a project on patient safety, practice or nursing education and present it as a paper and a poster. The catalog requires compliance with all institutional requirements before you start it.
What compliance items does the RN-to-BSN require?
No itemized list is published for this program. All the catalog says is that you must meet institutional requirements before starting the Senior Nursing Project. Ask your advisor or Student Success Coach what to have on file, and when, so the capstone isn't delayed.
Is the RN-to-BSN the same as the start of the RN-to-MSN?
No. They are separate programs. The RN-to-MSN bridge takes ADN and diploma nurses straight through to the MSN, and the 2023-24 catalog let NUR 510 and NUR 522 count toward both degrees. The RN-to-BSN ends with the bachelor's degree. The RN-to-MSN page compares them.
Can I take Spring Arbor's RN-to-BSN if I live in New York?
SAU's RN-to-BSN page lists New York, along with Alabama, Arizona and Louisiana, as states where its nursing programs are not authorized. Ask SAU admissions before applying from any of those states, and check again if you plan to continue to an MSN.
