When to start: the Spring Arbor clinical timeline

01Start in the first few months

SAU's preceptor tips post tells students to begin the search in the first few months of the program. The post dates from 2015 but is still live, and its logic holds: your first practicum may be a year or more away, but a willing preceptor, a signed site agreement and a clean compliance file each take time you cannot squeeze at the end.

SAU pages from 2015 and 2022 described NP clinicals as usually starting in the second year. The campus residency, NUR 602R, falls in year two for BSN-entry students and year three for RN-to-MSN students, and under the 2023-24 catalog it has to be passed before any NP practicum. That places your first clinical course after the residency, which gives you a rough anchor. The MSN residency page covers it in detail.

02The calendar you are working inside

SAU's graduate programs sit inside two long semesters a year. The 2026-27 academic calendar runs fall 2026 from July 7 to December 21, 2026, spring 2027 from January 12 to June 28, 2027 (with graduate classes ending June 21), and fall 2027 from July 6 to December 20, 2027.

Inside each semester you take one seven-week course at a time, with a one-week break between courses. SAU's FAQ says that one-course limit excludes clinical and residency, and the 2023-24 catalog describes seven-week courses running one at a time while clinical courses continue alongside. A clinical semester therefore means patient hours on top of a regular course, not instead of one. The 7-1-7 schedule page explains the model.

SAU publishes how many starts each program has, six a year for most BSN-entry tracks, four for RN-entry tracks and two for the DNP, but not the date each seven-week session opens. Your advisor can give you those.

03Milestones to plan around

Course numbers are from the 2023-24 catalog, and the current catalogs could not be read, so numbering may have changed. Your advisor can confirm the current numbers. Hours for each track are on clinical hours.

04Working back from your first clinical course

1. Find the course start dateAsk your advisor for the exact opening date of your first clinical course. SAU publishes semester spans, not session dates.
2. Mark the four-week dateCount back four weeks. That is the latest the 2023-24 catalog allows for the clinical agreement, affiliation and preceptor verification forms, and it is a floor rather than a target.
3. Add time for the siteWhere SAU and the site have no agreement yet, allow for review on both sides. SAU publishes no turnaround, so leave generous room; see affiliation agreements.
4. Add time for complianceBackground check, drug test, TB, immunizations, CPR/BLS and liability insurance all need to be current before the practicum, and some results take days to come back.
5. Set your own search deadlineThe date you need a preceptor's firm yes comes before all of that. Our planning advice, not an SAU rule, is to have it a full semester ahead of the course.

05Multi-semester practicums need more than one plan

Most SAU NP practicums span more than one semester. In the 2023-24 catalog, NUR 680 runs over three semesters for FNP students (2, 4 and 4 credits) and AGPCNP students (2, 2 and 4 credits), at 125 hours for every 2 credits, while NUR 780M and NUR 780K run over two semesters at 4 credits each. The per-semester hour split is not published, so confirm it with your faculty.

Each rotation needs its own approval, so plan the second and third semesters while the first is under way. If your first preceptor cannot continue, you want the next one lined up before the break, not after it. PMHNP students, told to plan on several placements, should sketch every site at the outset.

06If the calendar is already tight

If your first clinical course is this semester and you have no preceptor, work on two fronts at once: tell your course faculty and program director now, and widen your search past your first choices. In a program built on fixed semesters and multi-semester practicums, a late start can ripple into the terms that follow. Need a preceptor fast and delayed graduation cover both sides of that.
